LECTURER – Retired Fire Captain Bill Gustin – Miami Dade Fire Rescue
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 8-hour program will examine various types of standpipes and sprinkler systems, how they function and reasons why they can fail to suppress fires. This course will consist of components in Tampa (am) and in Pinellas Park (pm). At the end of the course students will be able to:
- List three considerations of fire loading that can render sprinkler protection ineffective.
- Explain why Operations Level fire personnel generally have a weak understanding of fire alarm and fire suppression systems.
- Describe the conditions and events that led to the severe damage or total destruction of several “big box” retail and storage facilities.
- Explain why 13 fire departments are being sued by Walmart for the destruction of the Walmart Fulfillment Center in Plainfield, IN.
- Describe why pumping fire department connections (FDCs) is a “battle of the pressures” with a building’s fire suppression systems.
- List three standpipe systems where pressurizing an FDC is a necessity not just a precaution.
- Explain the difference between prescriptive and performance-based fire suppression system design.
- List two reasons why Ikea furniture stores are not required to have in-rack sprinklers.
- Explain why discount auto parts and dollar stores are considered “disposable” buildings at the corporate level.…and much more.
